Located on the northwest slope of Beaverton’s Cooper Mountain, it was purchased by Ralph and Belle Jenkins in 1912. The description in Sullivan’s book is a good one - it is called Angels Rest but you will not, as lest not until you reach the top. This trail is extremely popular as its one of the closest hikes to the Portland metro area. Located in Pembroke, Virginia, access the trail head by taking Cascade Drive (VA-623) off of US. This is a medium difficulty out and back trail to Angels Rest in Oregon. Easily accessible from US-460 near Pearisburg, this hike along the Appalachian Trail gains a total of 1600’ elevation is a 4.6 mile round trip hike. Turn left at a junction for a famous - and fabulous - view. Once the grounds of a fancy summer home, Jenkins Estate takes you back to the early 1900s with its historic structures and English-style gardens. For a tough hike with rewarding views, check out Angels Rest and the Wilburn Valley Overlook. Please don't shortcut the switchbacks, as this damages native plants and leads to damaging erosion. Use caution while hiking these switchbacks, and do not kick rocks on the trail, as this could trigger a landslide or injure hikers below. The trail then winds uphill with a series of switchbacks for 1.6 miles - through an area scarred by an earlier fire in the 1990s - before reaching the ridge crest. The trail climbs uphill at an average trail grade of 10-15% for about half a mile before reaching the top of Coopey Falls, a 150-175 foot horsetail waterfall, where a footbridge crosses the creek. It is just beginning to recover from the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire, and just reopened to public use in November 2018. This classic hike is best known for being a good workout that rewards with a spectacular view of Portland. ![]()
